At University Schools Trust, our mission is to provide transformational education for all. A recent coding workshop for Year 5 and Year 6 pupils from Cyril Jackson Primary School brought this mission to life through an inspiring visit to the innovation centre at HSBC.

Located on the 42nd floor, the highest floor in the building, the setting alone captured pupils’ imaginations. Led by recent graduates, the session introduced our pupils to the exciting world of computer programming in a way that was both accessible and engaging. The day began with a discussion about the most impressive technology pupils had seen, sparking lively conversation and curiosity.

Pupils explored different programming languages and discovered that a bug refers to an error in code, a term that originated when early computers were disrupted by real insects.

Working collaboratively on iPads, they learned to code using an 8 by 8 matrix, applying row and column indexes to write commands such as m[1][1]=on. They began by colouring a single pixel before progressing to coding a heart shape and experimenting with colour through variables. They also learned important naming conventions and were introduced to functions used to repeat sections of code efficiently.

The opportunity to experience virtual reality headsets was a key highlight. A Year 6 pupil said, "The best part about the trip was getting to use the VR headsets because I have not been able to experience something like this before!"
