University Schools Trust is delighted to celebrate the success of Cyril Jackson Primary School staff members Hodo Dirir and Maryum Qureshi, who, together with UST consultant Julian Grenier, have had their work published by the Chartered College of Teaching.

Being published through the Chartered College is a prestigious achievement, reserved for articles that demonstrate rigorous practice and meaningful impact. The team were supported by our Director of Education (Primary) Laura McPhee, whose guidance helped shape the final piece.

Their article, Shape Coding: The innovative use of a specialist approach in an inclusive primary school to help every child succeed in writing, shares how Cyril Jackson has taken a specialist teaching method and used it to strengthen learning across mainstream classrooms.

Shape Coding is a visual approach that helps children understand grammar and sentence construction, which was originally designed for pupils with developmental language disorders.

The Cyril Jackson team explored how this approach could be applied more widely to improve outcomes for every child.

The case study outlines how the initiative was piloted and then scaled up across the school, with powerful results. Children with additional needs, new arrivals with limited English, and mainstream learners alike all benefited from this innovative and inclusive method.

This recognition demonstrates the hard work, expertise and commitment of UST staff in driving forward evidence-informed practice that makes a real difference to children’s lives.
