Pupils at Sir William Burrough Primary School recently welcomed representatives from Queen Mary University of London for a second round of engaging science workshops, providing another exciting opportunity to explore the world of scientific discovery.

Following an initial session that introduced pupils to the role of a scientist, Year 3 and Year 4 children were eager to learn more about the diverse careers available within science. Led by Queen Mary Ambassadors, the workshops offered a series of hands on activities designed to inspire curiosity and deepen understanding.

Pupils rotated between three interactive stations. At the astronomy station, they explored the work of astronomers and learned about different types of galaxies, including spiral, elliptical and irregular galaxies.

In the chemistry workshop, pupils discovered that water is a chemical and investigated the properties of acids and alkalis. Working collaboratively, they used pH indicators to test a range of liquids and identify whether they were acidic or alkaline.

One year 4 pupil during the experiment said, “I really liked seeing the colour of the liquid change when testing the PH.”

Meanwhile, at the sports technology station, pupils explored how scientific testing supports athletes. Using an infrared camera, they examined body heat patterns and investigated how different types of clothing affected heat retention. One pupil said, "It was really cool to see the heat from my hand still showing on the infrared camera even after I had moved it away from the table!" Through practical experiments, they learned the importance of conducting fair and consistent tests.

The workshops provided a valuable opportunity for pupils to experience science in action. Throughout the sessions, they demonstrated enthusiasm, teamwork and a willingness to ask thoughtful questions while developing their scientific knowledge and skills.
