As part of our commitment to broadening horizons and raising aspirations, pupils at St Paul’s Way and Sir William Burrough Primary recently took part in an inspiring workshop delivered by students from Queen Mary University of London. The visit reflects the power of partnership in bringing learning to life.

The session began with the university students introducing themselves and inviting pupils to share what they already knew about Queen Mary. This opened up an engaging discussion about higher education and helped the young learners begin to see university as a realistic and exciting future pathway.

Through a series of interactive activities, pupils were encouraged to think differently about science. They were asked to select objects they believed a scientist would use, before discovering that none of the items in the box were used by scientists at all.

This clever challenge prompted thoughtful discussion about the true nature of science. Pupils shared their understanding of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and reflected on how science can be both theoretical and practical. They explored the scientific process, learning about research, experimentation, reviewing results and refining ideas when outcomes are not as expected.

The workshop also invited pupils to connect their own hobbies and interests to potential careers in science. By matching activities they enjoy to real-world roles, they began to understand how science shapes the world around them and how their personal interests could lead to future opportunities.
