Sir William Burrough Primary School, recently visited the Royal Docklands museum to explore the fascinating world of transportation, bringing classroom learning to life through an exciting and interactive museum experience.
The trip supported the pupils’ current curriculum topic on transportation, providing an opportunity to build on what they had already learnt in class. By exploring real examples and taking part in practical activities, children were able to make meaningful connections between their lessons and the world around them.
Travelling to the museum by bus was an important part of the experience, allowing pupils to experience a form of transport first-hand. On arrival, they were also able to see a real boat and the Docklands Light Railway, sparking curiosity about the different ways people and goods travel.
Inside the museum, the children discovered a wealth of hand- on activities designed to help them understand the history and importance of the Royal Docks. They explored a water play area to learn about boats, pulled ropes attached to sacks and used toy cranes with magnets to investigate how cargo is loaded and unloaded from ships. Builder’s hats, wheelbarrows and blocks provided further opportunities for imaginative play, while a boat shaped soft play area offered even more excitement.
The young learners also enjoyed sensory activities that encouraged them to touch, smell and listen to objects connected with transportation, from the past and present. These interactive experiences helped make new ideas accessible, memorable and enjoyable for our youngest learners.
The visit demonstrated how learning beyond the classroom can inspire curiosity, encourage exploration and deepen children’s understanding of the topics they study. By combining play with practical discovery, Sir William Burrough Primary gave pupils a valuable opportunity to learn through experience.
At University Schools Trust, we are proud to support experiences that broaden horizons and bring learning to life. This visit reflects our mission of providing transformational education for all, ensuring every child has opportunities to discover new interests, develop their understanding and reach their full potential.
