We’re so happy to share the success of a recent visit by Year 6 pupils from Sir William Burrough to the HSBC Innovation Centre.

The trip offered a unique opportunity for pupils to explore the worlds of coding, digital creativity and modern technology in a truly inspiring setting.

Taking place high above the city on the forty second floor, the workshop opened with pupils reflecting on the most impressive piece of technology they had ever encountered.

This sparked energetic discussion and set the tone for a day filled with curiosity and discovery.

Pupils began by using Imagi Charm to create their own digital art. Recent graduates from HSBC introduced the basics of programming and explained the many computer languages used today.

One of the most memorable moments was learning that the term ‘Computer bug’, means an error in code, originated from the days when large computers could be affected by real insects.

Working in groups, pupils used tablets to explore an 8x8 matrix and learned how index numbers are used to identify each row and column.

Their first challenge was to light up pixels to create a heart shape, a task that many pupils completed with real pride. Some even advanced their designs by creating filled shapes.

They later explored variables, colour changes and functions which allow programmers to avoid repeating long lines of code. The day ended with great excitement as pupils tried a Meta Quest headset, a highlight for many.

We are grateful to HSBC for providing such a invaluable learning experiences. This visit was a prime example of one of our missions to provide transformational education. It opened new horizons, encouraged creativity and allowed pupils to see themselves as future innovators in an ever changing digital world.
