St Paul’s Way Primary School, part of University Schools Trust, has been bringing creativity, imagination and community spirit together through an exciting art project inspired by the River of Light festival.
As part of the project, pupils have been designing and creating their own lanterns, transforming their ideas into colourful works of art. With guidance and support, the children have explored their creativity, developed practical skills and discovered how simple materials can be used to create something truly special.
The project will culminate in an evening walk along the river near sunset, when the children will have the opportunity to see their creations illuminated. As daylight fades, their handmade lanterns will glow, creating a memorable experience that celebrates their hard work and brings their artwork to life in a beautiful riverside setting.
River of Light, including the Light up the Lea initiative, brings schools, families and local communities together through creative workshops and illuminated processions. The project celebrates East London’s waterways, wildlife and local identity, helping young people develop a stronger connection with the environment and the places they call home.
For pupils at St Paul’s Way Primary, the experience is about much more than making lanterns. It encourages them to express themselves, appreciate their local surroundings and take part in a shared community celebration. It also provides an opportunity to see how art can bring people together and transform familiar spaces into something magical.
At University Schools Trust, we are proud to see our schools creating meaningful experiences that inspire curiosity, nurture creativity and connect learning with the wider world. Projects such as River of Light demonstrate the value of giving children opportunities to explore new ideas, develop their talents and create lasting memories together.
This initiative reflects the Trust’s mission of providing transformational education for all, ensuring every child has access to enriching experiences that broaden horizons, build confidence and help them discover their potential.
