St Paul’s Way Primary School, recently dedicated a full day to celebrating Black History Month, giving pupils the opportunity to explore Black history, recognise inspiring individuals and reflect on the achievements and contributions that have helped shape our world.
Throughout the day, pupils took part in engaging workshops designed to bring history to life through creativity, discussion and discovery. One of the activities saw children create portraits inspired by the artistic style of John Blanke, the Black trumpeter who served at the courts of King Henry VII and King Henry VIII. Through this creative task, pupils explored representation in art and learned about an important historical figure whose story challenges assumptions about Black presence and influence in Tudor England.
Alongside their artwork, pupils learned about famous Black individuals who have made a significant difference across history and society. The workshops explored stories of personal growth, determination and success, highlighting the achievements of people who overcame barriers, challenged expectations and helped bring about meaningful change.
The day also encouraged our young learners to consider the impact of important movements led by Black individuals and communities. By learning about these stories, children were able to develop a greater understanding of the struggles, progress and achievements that have contributed to a more inclusive society.
At University Schools Trust, we believe that education should extend beyond the classroom, helping young people develop an appreciation of different perspectives, cultures and experiences. Events such as this provide valuable opportunities for pupils to ask questions, celebrate diversity and recognise the importance of equality, respect and representation.
We are proud to see St Paul’s Way Primary creating meaningful learning experiences that inspire pupils to think critically, express themselves creatively and learn from the achievements of others.
This celebration reflects University Schools Trust’s mission of providing transformational education for all, ensuring every child has the opportunity to broaden their horizons, develop their understanding of the world and feel empowered to achieve their full potential.
