St Paul’s Way Secondary recently welcomed the BBC Bitesize Careers Tour, giving Year 9 students an exciting opportunity to explore a variety of career pathways and hear first hand from professionals working in creative industries.
The visit brought three inspiring guests from the local area into school: Trenton Harrison Lewis, a signing artist who works with a record label, Anika Raan, a BBC project manager who joined through an apprenticeship, and James Gibbs, a creative venue technician specialising in lighting. Each speaker shared their career journey, helping students understand how different interests and experiences can lead to rewarding professional opportunities.
The panel discussion encouraged students to think about their own ambitions and the many routes available to achieve them. Trenton explained that he had not always known what career he wanted to pursue and had once considered becoming a helicopter pilot. Anika initially aspired to become a doctor before deciding to explore an apprenticeship with the BBC. James had originally focused on music before beginning his career as an apprentice technician. He now works as a freelancer across a variety of venues.
Their stories showed students that career paths are not always straightforward and that it is perfectly normal for ambitions to change over time. The guests encouraged pupils to follow their passions, remain open to new opportunities and recognise the value of gaining practical experience.
Students also had the chance to take part in a BBC careers quiz, helping them explore which roles might suit their interests and strengths. This interactive activity encouraged them to consider possibilities they may not previously have imagined.
At University Schools Trust, we are proud to see St Paul’s Way Secondary providing opportunities for students to connect with inspiring professionals and discover the breadth of careers available to them.
The visit reflects the Trust’s mission of providing transformational education for all, helping every young person broaden their horizons, build confidence and develop the knowledge and skills to shape their future.
