The UST all primaries inset day at Cyril Jackson Primary School brought together colleagues from Sir William Burrough Primary School and St Paul’s Way Trust School for a focused and collaborative day of professional development.

The session was delivered in partnership with Tower Hamlets Education Partnership and centred on strengthening expertise in the assessment of reading.

The aim of the day was to deepen subject knowledge through reading moderation, ensuring consistency and confidence in how reading is assessed across the trust.

Participants worked through recorded video examples to support consistent judgements and applied moderation approaches within year group teams from Nursery through to Year 6.

These sessions provided opportunities to analyse pupil responses, compare assessment evidence and develop shared understanding of reading progress.

In the afternoon, attention turned to developing reading questions using looking, clue and thinking prompts, alongside exploring the role of metacognition in reading. Staff reflected on how children engage with texts and the importance of fluency in supporting comprehension.

Discussions also highlighted powerful reading moments, from stories that build empathy to texts that spark inference and debate.

The day concluded with next steps focused on strengthening classroom practice and further embedding consistent approaches to reading assessment across all schools.

These collaborative sessions reflects out Trust’s commitment of providing transformational education for all, constantly ensuring we are sharing ideas and advancing in our teaching strategies.
